PUNISHED FOR BEING POOR
When poverty decides our fate
People of color living in Texas have a higher likelihood to experience poverty and economic injustice. Their lack of access to housing, quality education, affordable health care and basic services directly impacts their ability to fully participate in society and experience quality of life. They also may suffer harsher punishment for being poor and face unfair financial burdens and growing debt due to a criminal Justice system that relies heavily on offender funded punitive systems.
84%
Of people surveyed in Travis and Williamson county are either financially coping or vulnerable
48%
People do not have emergency savings for unexpected circumstances
29%
Of Texans in neighborhoods of color has medical debt in collection
Why should we care?
Poverty has a direct and long-lasting impact on a person’s health and well-being throughout their lifetime. Research has shown that financial health can lead to a longer life span, lower rates of chronic health conditions, lower rates of substance use and increased mental health.
What should we do?
Help people improve their financial health and build wealth so they can manage their debt, plan for the future and achieve financial freedom.
Innovate to create a more inclusive and equitable financial system by increasing access to safe and affordable financial products and tools that support saving, spending, borrowing and investing.
OUR MODEL
An Intersectional Approach
Financial Health Pathways (FHP) focuses on addressing systemic issues that prevent people from existing poverty at multiple levels of intervention. By embracing innovation and collaboration, where all sectors understand their role and make adjustments accordingly, we seek to make structural changes that will enable people to access economic opportunities and achieve financial freedom. Through our signature programs we aim to influence individuals, the communities they live in and the policy that guides them.
Individuals: I save Texas! (matching savings) & Financial Justice (FJ) program (diversion program)
Community: Collaborating with community partners
Policy: Working with government and elected officials to create awareness of critical issues that increase poverty in our community so we can develop inclusive and equitable policies.
